H.E. Simpson Lumber Co. in Kalispell, Montana opened its doors for business in 1953.  Originally Harold “Hap” Simpson was involved in the railroad tie business; operating a sawmill and providing ties to local treating operations that then sold them to the railroads.

John Hammett joined the company in 1958 and helped it evolve into a true wholesale operation.  Hap and John helped to establish the strong partially air-dried (PAD) spruce market, which is produced abundantly in northwestern Montana.  Sawmill activity and stud production has been a historical focal point for northwestern Montana.  In the 1950’s, timely construction of precision-end trimmed (P.E.T.) studs was essential to the building boom; today this continues to be a focus of our business.

The face of H.E. Simpson Lumber Co. changed in 1971 when John Hammett bought out his long-time partner, Hap.  His son, Richard “Dick” Hammett, joined the company ranks as a wholesale lumber trader in 1983.  John Hammett retired from the wholesale lumber industry in 2001.

The Hammett family continues to operate H.E. Simpson Lumber Co. as a wholesale lumber brokerage house.  In 2004, Dick purchased the company and has continued to focus on the foundation principals that H.E. Simpson Lumber Co. was built on:  a quality product with quality service and quality people.

As President and owner, Dick has also focused on growing the company into new markets.  2005 greeted H.E. Simpson Lumber Co. with new sales offices and reloads in Utah.  In January of 2006 a sales office was opened in California.
